2025 Year End Article

As 2025 comes to an end, the Shiawassee County Health Department would like to highlight the accomplishments that were made by our staff and partnerships. In 2025, health department highlights included:

  • Conducted two Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collections in Durand and Owosso. This year between our two collections we collected 24,443 lbs. of HHW waste that otherwise would have been improperly disposed of in a landfill or into the environment.
  • Conducted scrap tire collection as part of the annual Shiawassee River Cleanup in July. Recycled 877 tires including 28 pulled from the river.
  • The Materials Management (MM) program development continued. The focus is on recycling throughout the county and developing a plan to increase recycling rates.
  • Created a partnership with Shiawassee Health and Wellness – New Directions program to provide a public health nurse 8 hours per week.
  • Held 3rd Annual Back to School Health Fair and had 363 attendees. Partnered with many local agencies to provide services to families.
  • Worked with Shiawassee Prevention Network to distribute 148 Harm Reduction kits, 58 Rapid HIV tests, 266 xylazine testing strips.
  • Distributed 43,060 condoms through the Wear One Program.
  • Collected 238 pounds of sharps from the Sharps Drop Box outside the Health Department
  • Distributed 128 boxes of Narcan.
  • Partnered with Great Start Shiawassee to install a reading nook within the WIC clinic waiting room.
  • 277 women received hospital and in-home visits from SCHD staff to assist them with breastfeeding.
  • Hosted a drive-up flu and COVID-19 clinic in October.
  • 175 individuals received safe sleep training through the High Touch High Tech (HT2) program.
  • Partnered with the Greater Lansing Diaper Bank to offer free diapers to those who qualify.

The Shiawassee County Health Department would like to acknowledge the efforts of our staff, Health Board members, volunteers, and community partners for all the work they do for the residents of Shiawassee County.

Our team plans to continue ongoing projects, establish new programs and services, and build new relationships with community members and organizations. SCHD looks forward to promoting wellness and protecting health in 2026!
